Squid isn't kosher. See Varnish.
As for the original question, use what you know better.
(I wouldn't use neither.)

I personally would recommend Linux since it
a) has a wider variety of supported platforms and hardware
b) provides better perfomance, scalability and reliability
c) is supported by commercial companies, like RedHat or Novell, where you could claim technicall support
d) is able to run more third-party software poducts.

How is this relevant here?
> b) provides better perfomance, scalability and reliability
Dubious statement at the very least.

Can you share success story of asking for their support for
private use (not corporate one)?
NetBSD is supported by Force10 which is telecomm company
producing solutions for data centres.
FreeBSD is supported by Juniper which is telecomm company,
the name tells you all.
What technological achievements do Red Hat or Novell have
that make them so distinguished?
> d) is able to run more third-party software poducts.
Except for one source-based system, this is outdated or obsolete software.
What does it buy you?
Right, we have pkgsrc on Linux too, but then you go better with NetBSD.

Miscrosoft Windows is the only answer. It's global and reliable.

Would you recommend which OS (freeBSD or Linux) I can use for Gateway/Firewall/NAT/DHCP/DNS/Web Cache Proxy(Squid)/File sharing(NFS, samba)/PPPoE/Mail/Web servers?
